The Caterpillar Underground Mining Burnie New Year's Day Carnival is part of the Tasmanian Christmas Sports Carnivals eight-day series incorporating closed street circuit cycling criteriums, velodrome cycling and time-honoured track meetings at Latrobe, Devonport and Burnie, with a history dating back to the 1880's.
Held at West Park Oval, the Burnie Carnival programme includes cycling, athletics ,woodchopping, junior 'Nu-Gen Carnival' (Under 14 and Under 16 boys and girls) and family entertainment.
The Burnie Athletic Club will be celebrating its 130th Carnival on New Year?s Day 2017, which includes the prestigious Burnie Gift - a 120 metre handicapped foot race.
